Today I received confirmation that my recent cancellation of Sprint's wireless service was totally the right thing to do, even if 6 months from now it cost me $233.61 and/or a few points on my credit score. Here is what happened, you be the judge. My wife and I were visiting family over Thanksgiving and we went to BestBuy on 'Black Friday' and purchased a nice new phone for her and re-upped with Sprint for 2 years. She had a pretty good rate plan and was happy with the service so we figured why not. Two weeks later her phone is missing calls left and right. The thing never rings when people are calling and text messages only get to her 45mins to an hour later!! Obviously this is not acceptable and we figured we better get something figured out before 30 days pass. Here are the steps we took and somehow Sprint still thinks we owe them an early termination fee:
- Took the phone to BestBuy. Told that BestBuy does not sell Sprint phones in our state, we must go back to the STATE we purchased it from.
- Called Sprint to ask for phone replacement, telling them that we bought phone in a different state over Thanksgiving. There response was "Take it to any of our stores, they will replace it".
- Took phone to local store. Store refuses to replace phone, saying we must return it to a BestBuy and that "They don't care what 'corporate' told us".
- Call Sprint back. Customer service tells us they can not do anything about the phone. We ask how long we have to terminate our contract. They say 2 days. We ask "As long as we terminate it by then, we get charged NO termination fee?" - Response from Sprint: That is correct.
- We go to AT&T and add wife to my account, canceling/transferring her number from Sprint.
- Call back Sprint to DOUBLE CHECK that we were good and no termination fee would be charged. Response from Sprint: That is correct.
- We ask about the phone "Are we just out the $20 we paid for the phone?" - Response from Sprint: That is correct.
- 3 weeks later we have a bill from Sprint claiming we terminated our contract without returning the phone and we owe $233.61 even though we talked to them TWICE and they never said we had to return it or anything to that fact.
- We offered to ship the phone back to BestBuy (since it's in ANOTHER STATE) or back to Sprint and were told we were NOW over the 30 day limit and had to pay the fee. Dirty Slimy Fuckers!!
Repeated attempts to contact Sprint and resolve this have went no where and at this point I expect to be sent to collections. If that happens I'll be sure to post pictures of me outside my local Sprint store's with my "SPRINT STOLE $233.61 FROM ME" picket sign and prepare to take the credit score hit.
They will not get that money from me or they will spend/loose one hell of a lot more than $233.61 getting it out of me.
Right or Wrong?
Feel free to drop Sprint CEO Dan Hesse an email and let him know either way.
